Small businesses typically operate with a canopy size of up to 10,000 sqft. These farms usually have limited resources and have to focus much of their efforts on quality and unique offerings to compete in the market against larger, better funded brands. Small farms, especially outdoor farms, were the origin of the cannabis industry in California, and some can still trace their heritage, cultural values, and cultivation practices back to those early days before legalization.
Single License Operators only own one active license in California, which means they only have one narrow opportunity to succeed in today's challenging industry. In most cases, these operators manage small or medium-sized farms and rely heavily on their brand identity and unique offerings to stand out in the competitive market. There are a few large-scale operations that only have one license, since starting in 2023 the law allows licensees with many smaller farms to consolidate them together under a Large-category license. At Higher Origins, our focus is on the smaller single license operators who only have one operation to make or break their success.
