Before you begin

Use a Metrc account that can access every facility you need in Higher Origins. A user API key belongs to the Metrc user and its access is limited by that user's permissions.

Treat the key like a password. Do not paste it into email, chat, screenshots, or documentation.

1. Find the key in Metrc

  1. Sign in to your state's Metrc site.

  2. Open the user menu in the upper-right area and choose API Keys.

  3. Copy the current user API key if one is available.

Generating a new user API key deactivates the previous one. Other connected systems that use the old key will stop authenticating until they are updated, so rotate the key only when you intend to update every integration.

Metrc documents that the key is tied to the user's account and permissions in its official API documentation.

2. Save it in Higher Origins

In Higher Origins, open Business Settings, choose Metrc, enter the user API key, and choose Save. During account creation you can instead enter it in the optional Metrc API Key field on Business Sign Up.

3. Import facilities

After the key validates, review the facilities returned for that Metrc user. Import the facilities that belong to the selected Higher Origins business. Confirm the selected business before importing so facilities are attached to the intended workspace.

4. Start synchronization

Importing a facility automatically queues item and package backfill. Use Sync Transfers when you need transfer records, and Schedule Full Import when you need supported historical data from the most recent two years. Higher Origins also schedules item, package, lab, and transfer synchronization each hour. Use Inventory > Sync Status to check completion rather than submitting the same operation repeatedly.

Troubleshooting

  • No facilities: confirm the Metrc user can access them and that the copied key has not been rotated.

  • Authentication failure after generating a key: replace the saved Higher Origins key with the new value.

  • Wrong business: switch to the intended business in Higher Origins before importing facilities.

  • Incomplete inventory: confirm the facility import and review Inventory Sync Status before running another full import.
